Deadly Mudslide Near Lillooet, B.C.: Three Men Confirmed Dead as Search for Missing Person Ends

A devastating mudslide near Lillooet, British Columbia, has claimed multiple lives and left another person missing after extreme rainfall triggered dangerous landslides along Highway 99, also known as Duffey Lake Road.

The disaster highlights the serious risks created by unstable terrain, intense rainfall, flooding, and rapidly changing weather conditions across parts of British Columbia.

Three Men Confirmed Dead After Highway 99 Mudslide

According to authorities, the mudslide occurred on November 15 during a period of severe weather and heavy rainfall.

B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed that recovery teams located several victims in the days following the disaster. A woman’s body was initially recovered from debris on Monday, followed by the recovery of one man’s body on Wednesday and two additional men’s bodies on Thursday.

Authorities later confirmed that three men had died, while another man remained unaccounted for.

The search for the missing individual was eventually suspended after rescue crews determined that available search options had been exhausted.

Dangerous Conditions Hampered Rescue Efforts

The recovery operation involved the RCMP and specialized emergency response teams, but crews faced extremely difficult conditions.

The mudslide left large amounts of unstable debris across the affected area. Shifting earth, dangerous terrain, continuing bad weather, and the possibility of additional landslides created significant risks for first responders.

Search and rescue personnel had to carefully assess the site before entering potentially unstable areas.

Authorities are also working to formally identify those who died and notify their families.
