Few television stars have shared a life story as complicated and deeply personal as Melissa Gilbert. Her biological parents, David Darlington and Kathy Wood, were unable to raise another child while pursuing their own lives, so they placed their daughter for adoption.

Gilbert grew up with her adoptive parents and became particularly close to her adoptive father, Paul. For much of her childhood, however, she understood her biological family through a story that later turned out to contain significant inaccuracies.

She had been told that her biological father was a Rhodes Scholar and that her biological mother was a prima ballerina.

As Gilbert eventually learned, the reality was considerably different.

Her biological mother had worked as a dancer, while her biological father worked as a stock car racer and sign painter.

Her Adoptive Parents Had Not Planned to Adopt

Barbara and Paul had reportedly been undergoing fertility treatments. Adoption was not necessarily something they had expected to pursue when they received an unexpected call informing them that a baby girl was available.

That baby was Melissa.

The circumstances were unusual, but the adoption eventually became the beginning of Gilbert’s life with the family she knew as her own.

The Painful Truth About Her Father’s Death

Perhaps the most difficult revelation of Gilbert’s childhood came years after her adoptive father’s death.

When Paul Gilbert died in 1976, Melissa was told that he had suffered a stroke.

She was still young and accepted the explanation she had been given.

Years later, however, she discovered that the truth was far more painful: Paul had died by suicide.

The revelation profoundly affected her.

Learning that a person she loved had died under circumstances she had never understood forced Gilbert to revisit memories of her childhood and her relationship with her father.

She later described the experience as deeply devastating.

Searching for Answers

After learning the truth, Gilbert struggled with intense grief.

She experienced difficulties with eating and sleeping and eventually sought professional support.

She also wanted to understand what had happened to Paul.

Rather than simply accepting unanswered questions, Gilbert hired a detective to investigate the circumstances surrounding her father’s death.

Through that process, she learned more about Paul’s physical suffering and the difficulties he had experienced before his death.
