Born Grady Demond Wilson on October 13, 1946, in Valdosta, Georgia, Wilson was raised in New York City and discovered performing at a remarkably young age.
As a child, he trained in dance and appeared on Broadway. He also performed at Harlem’s historic Apollo Theater before eventually moving into television and film. His early experiences on stage helped establish the foundation for a career that would eventually make him a familiar face to millions of American households.
Wilson also served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968 and was wounded while serving in Vietnam. After returning to civilian life, he continued pursuing acting and landed early television opportunities, including an appearance on All in the Family.

In 1972, Wilson was cast as Lamont Sanford on NBC’s Sanford and Son.
